CTSR’s precast concrete system holds promise for mass housing

A new building technology making its way into Nigeria’s construction industry is offering yet another bait to mass housing developers, with a concept that claims the ability to enhance efficiency by 70 times compared to traditional construction methods.
At a precast factory, which will cover over the 100,000 square metres of land, situated close to the Abuja Train Station in Idu Industrial Area of the territory, a demonstration project has commenced and, if the expectation of the promoters are anything to go by, the new technology will support the efforts of the Federal Government in reducing the huge housing deficit in the country estimated at over 17 million.

Behind the German technology in Nigeria, is one of the nation’s leading real estate developer and construction firm, CTSR Group Limited. The company plans to set up its second factory along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the second quarter of the year.
A precast concrete is a construction product produced by casting concrete in a reusable mould or form, which is then cured in a controlled environment, and transported to the construction site and lifted into place.
The President of CTSR Group, Mrs. Funke Otti, who confirmed the development after a meeting with the stakeholders in the industry, said the factory would provide integrated solutions of precast concrete construction for residential and commercial buildings, public and industrial facilities and infrastructure for over 20 years.
Otti said: “CTSR Group is the Nigerian sole partner of Broad Homes, the multinational automated precast concrete production, building and Construction Company headquartered in China.
“The group is in business to deliver total precast design-build systems for many applications—from mixed-use to industrial, institutional to power generation. It intends to provide affordable housing to residents of the FCT and Nigerians across the country through the use of automated precast concrete technology.
“The technology provides factory made sustainable buildings, including reinforced concrete pre-casting, which is more efficient and durable energy-saving technology. The technology is of a higher quality having gone through standard manufacturing and assembly processes and cost effective.”
Otti told The Guardian that the main prototypes have been set up at the factory in 14 days – four days for the main structure while interiors and finishing takes about one week.
“To deliver durable, standardised, consistent quality homes, we must apply technology. Precast concrete is one of the suitable technology that can address housing shortage. We can offer buildings at 25 per cent less the cost of conventional construction,” she said.
According to the CTSR boss, the Abuja precast factory will consist of production plants, batching plant for concrete mixing, reinforcement plant and administrative block, among others.

Bassendean residents up in arms about concrete batching plant approval

SEVERAL Town of Bassendean residents are calling for the Town to appeal the State Administrative Tribunal’s approval of a concrete batching plant just 1km from another proposed plant in Bayswater.
The application for a mobile concrete batching plant on Clune Street was approved by SAT on December 5, subject to several conditions because the Town’s lawyers failed to give reasons for their refusal in June.

According to a Facebook post written by Councillor Renée McLennan, the Town’s staff and applicants Rowe Group debated about the appropriate conditions, which included the hours of operation, maximum daily production and average daily production output.
Cr McLennan said the application was taken out of the Council’s hands.
SAT would not consider a higher production as the applicant had not provided supporting information for its location within the 300m-500m buffer zone.
Bassendean resident Carol Siedel said the Council should consider contesting the SAT decision.
“I just do not think SAT has looked at the ramifications on the people who will be exposed to possible concrete dust,” she said.
“What really annoys me is that young children will be put at risk, they are the ones who could have their whole lives wrecked because of this approval for a asphalt concrete batching plant on their door step.
“I am absolutely horrified by this decision when there is real health and environmental concerns for the residents who live near by, students at Cyril Jackson campus and the people who work in the industrial area in Tonkin Park.”
Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives Asia Pacific pollution prevention programme coordinator Jane Bremmer said the plant would have adverse health impacts on communities and their environment.
“Concrete batching plants are simply incompatible land uses to be sited close to residential areas…and could hardly be considered a legitimate partner of any eco industrial village,” the Bassendean resident said.
Ashfield resident Warren Wright said he was “completely perplexed” by how the WA Environmental Protection Authority guidelines had been ignored.
“There are residential houses within the supposedly required buffer zone of 300m-500m… if the Town of Bassendean don’t appeal this decision then they have failed the people of Ashfield,” he said.
In September, Town development manager Brian Reed said a refusal would not be “sustainable” because going against the SAT appeal would cost the Town $10,000-$50,000 in legal fees.

FDNY firefighters extricate driver from overturned cement truck on Brooklyn-Queens Expressway

Firefighters made a daring and speedy rescue Friday to extricate a driver after his concrete mixer trucks overturned on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

The man’s right arm, which may have been hanging out of the driver’s side window, wound up pinned under the massive cement mixer truck after it flipped on its side near the westbound Flushing Ave. exit in Clinton Hill just after 11:30 a.m, FDNY Lt. Scott Cassese told the Daily News. Cassese was one of the first responders.

NYPD personnel had been first on the scene and found the unidentified man with his arm stuck under the hefty truck, Cassese said. A team of five FDNY responders was able to pry the injured man from the self loading concrete mixer truck and rush him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was in serious condition Friday night.

The FDNY team inflated airbags on both sides of the man’s stuck right arm in order to raise the vehicle off of him.

After contemplating removing the truck’s roof, they decided on using a metal cutting tool before they pulled the wounded man through the truck's damaged windshield.

Firefighters put a tourniquet on the man's arm, which was bleeding profusely.

“He was in serious danger of losing his hand, or worse,” said Lt.Cassese. The tourniquets had recently been issued to the department, said the 18-year veteran.

The man was then handed over to EMS workers.

The whole rescue took just five minutes, said Cassese, who called the response "flawless."

Authorities said they had not yet determined why the truck flipped over. The scene stalled westbound traffic on the highway for several miles.
